Chinese Scientists Given Research Leader Award by US Science Journal

Dec 01, 2002

The Scientific American 50's Research Leader of the Year award went to a trio of biologists: Yang Huanming of the Beijing Genomics Institute under CAS, Yu Jun of the University of Washington Genome Center and Stephen Goff of Syngenta's Torrey Mesa Research Institute. These researchers deserved the honor because of their leading roles in the genome sequencing of two types of rice, which feed more than half of the world population.

Scientific American, established in 1845, is a science journal with a worldwide reputation. Beginning from this year, it gives awards annually to 50 scientists, industrialists, political figures or organizations who make outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and technology. This year's awards go to those who have made outstanding achievements in the 2001-2002 period. Research Leader of the Year honor is the most prestigious among the 50 annual awards. The result of award recipient’s selection will be carried in the journal's December issue.

Prof. Yang Huanming and his institute accomplished the first genome mapping of Chinese super hybrid rice on Oct. 12, 2001. They reported their work on April 5, 2002 issue of Science and published all the genomics data on their genome database at the same time.
