Chinese Government Decided to Donate US$500,000 to TWAS

Nov 13, 2001

In order to seek further development and enhance its role in promoting the advancement of science and technology in South countries, the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has recently launched an appeal for contribution from developed and developing countries to the endowment fund of TWAS.

Before that, the State Commission of Science and Technology (now the Ministry of Science and Technology) had, on behalf of the Chinese Government, donated to TWAS twice, including the contribution of US$100,000 in 1994 and that of US$400,000 in 1996.

Being aware that China is a developing country with the largest population, and an active partner of exchange and cooperation among the developing countries, the Government attaches great importance to promoting the advancement of science and technology in the South, bringing closer the cooperative relationship with TWAS and strengthening the role of Chinese scientists in the Third World. It was under this awareness that the State Council approved, on 31 October 2001, that the Ministry of Science and Technology  should donate, on behalf of the Government, an additional US$500,000 to the endowment fund of TWAS. The donation will be allocated by the Ministry of Finance as a dedicated appropriation.

China has kept in close ties with TWAS in the past decades, and extensive cooperation has been conducted. On 22 March 2001, Chinese President Jiang Zemin highly praised the Academy for its significant role in facilitating the scientific and technological cooperation among the developing countries. Currently, there are more than 70 eminent Chinese scientists who are selected TWAS Fellows, including Profs. WU Jieping, ZHOU Guangzhao, LU Yongxiang, and so on. Besides, 16 outstanding scientists have been granted TWAS Awards in Basic Sciences and 2 institutes awarded TWNSO Prizes in Applied Technology. With the approval of the State Council, the 15th General Meeting, 9th General Conference & 20 Anniversary of TWAS will be convened in China from 15 to 21 October 2003.

Enhancing exchange and cooperation with Third World countries will promote the shared development of China and the other developing countries, solidifying the friendship between the Chinese and other peoples of the South and benefit the peace, stability and prosperity of the whole world.(Fu Shuqin and Zhang Shizhuan)
