Vacancy for Science Officer in the International Program Office for Integrated Research on Disaster Risk

A vacancy for Science Officer for the International Program Office (IPO) for Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) is open for application now.

IRDR is a major new 10-year international research programme co-sponsored by the International Council for Science (ICSU), International Social Science Council (ISSC) and United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR).

The International Program Office of IRDR is established at the Centre for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It is the first international office of a large science program ever established in Asia. The office will mainly serve the IRDR Scientific Committee, and is responsible for the operation, coordination, and promotion of IRDR.

Main purpose of job

To provide programme support for the IRDR International Programme Office and the
IRDR Scientific Committee.

Key duties and responsibilities

·     Providing planning and programming support to the IRDR Executive Director.

·     Developing and implementing a process to gather, archive and widely disseminate information from IRDR programmes, projects and initiatives.

·     Assisting the Executive Director in the planning and execution of IRDR Scientific Committee meetings. This will involve preparing draft agendas, background documents and summary records.

·     Planning and organizing workshops and Consultation Forum events in China and abroad.

·     Tracking action items from meetings.

·     Drafting materials destined for the IRDR website.

·     Providing a point of contact for the wider IRDR community, including partner organizations in research, National Committees and IRDR Centres for Research.

·     Giving briefings and presentations on the IRDR and the IPO to diverse audiences.

·     Overseeing the organization of IRDR presence at major conferences, including scheduling, leasing, booth displays, shipping and collation of materials.

·     Any other duties assigned by Executive Director.

Qualifications and skills needed

·     PhD degree in a scientific discipline relevant to natural hazards and disaster risk reduction.

·     Substantial experience of working in/with international programmes.

·     Experience presenting at international conferences.

·     Mastery of the English language. Ability to express oneself clearly and unambiguously in both written and spoken forms.

·     Familiarity with modern telecommunications and computer technology and software.

·     Organizational skills, including ability to identify and anticipate issues and to develop solutions.

·     Ability to work independent of daily or on-site supervision.

·     Willingness and ability to undertake international and domestic travel when required.
