Int'l Symposium on Remote Sensing Opens

The 35th International Symposium for Remote Sensing of the Environment (ISRSE) kicked off Monday in Beijing.

Themed "Earth observation and global environmental change," the five-day event has attracted more than 1,000 scholars and experts in remote sensing and other related areas from some 50 countries and regions.

During the five-day event, participants will discuss and exchange ideas on various topics including climate change and atmosphere, food crisis and poverty reduction, biodiversity, disaster reduction, among others.

The international event aims to promote the development and application of the remote sensing technology.

It is the first symposium in the series to be held in China.

Bai Chunli, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said at the opening ceremony that remote sensing will play a positive role in accelerating human beings' development and solving challenges concerning the environment and resources.

The symposium is mainly sponsored by the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth under the CAS. (Xinhua)
