USTC Alumnus GAO Dayong Wins Honor of Asian American Engineer of the Year, 2013

Mar 08, 2013

Dr. GAO Dayong, alumnus and “Master Chair II Professor” of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), won Asian American Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) Award, 2013 in Dallas, U.S. on Mar 2, 2013.

The Award is a National Engineers Week Program of U.S. to recognize the outstanding Asian-American professionals for their leadership, technical achievements and remarkable public services in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Dr. GAO won the annual award for his original and distinguished contributions to cryobiology, bio-preservation engineering, and the science and technology of artificial organs.

Dr. GAO graduated from USTC in 1982 and is now professor of Mechanical Engineering and Adjunct professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. His research work has been focused on the frontiers of three areas: 1) fundamental and applied cryobiology: investigating mechanisms of cryoinjury and cryoprotection to living biological systems at low temperatures, developing optimal methods and technology for cryopreservation and banking of living cells and tissues for biomedical applications; 2) artificial kidney and liver systems; and 3) bio-instruments and bio-sensors for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

The 2013 AAEOY events are supported by industry leaders, national laboratories, technical communities, academia, government agencies and prominent US companies. Some 600 distinguished guests, corporate executives and community leaders attended the 2013 AAEOY Award Ceremony. Another distinguished alumnus of USTC, Microsoft’s global vice president, Dr. ZHANG Yaqin, had also won the same award in 2006.
