QIBEBT, SAMSUNG Cooperate on DNA Logic Gates

Feb 16, 2013

The Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) launched a collaborative project “Design and Fabrication of Nanosized Logic Gates with the Fluorene Derivative (FD)/DNA Probes and their Application” on February 1, 2013 under the grants of Global Research Outreach (GRO) Program by Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).

Prof. YANG Renqiang, group leader of the Advanced Organic Functional Materials (AORM) at the QIBEBT, is the principal investigator of the interdisciplinary project. The proposal and design of this project combines AORM’s research background on organic chemistry, materials, device and molecular biology. Through the collaboration, YANG’s research group will design and synthesize new organic fluorescent molecules, then to construct nano-sized biological logic gates through covalent binding with DNA in which the changes of fluorescent wavelength and intensity will be acted as output.

Manager MENG Jinyu, representative of SAIT China, introduced the orientation and prospect of the Samsung and GRO program on the project's kickoff meeting. Both sides discussed the detailed cooperative plan, and clarified the scientific focal that will be worked out in the very near future. They also reached consensus on sustainable collaboration.

GRO program, open to leading universities around the world, is Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd. & related Samsung companies (SAMSUNG)'s annual call for research proposals. It is designed to create opportunities - at colleges, and universities around the world - for exploring breakthrough & innovative research. Selected proposals will receive financial support for one year ranging from $50,000 (USD) to $100,000.
