Sino-German Joint Research Program Approved

Jun 05, 2012

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany and the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) approved to conduct Sino-German Joint Interdisciplinary Research Program (SG-JIRP) on Symmetries and the Emergence of Structure in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) on May 22, 2012.

The project will receive a research fund of over 5 million Euros from DFG. It will be jointly led by Prof. Ulf.G.Meissner from University of Bonn and Prof. ZOU Bingsong from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. More than 20 scientists from both countries in the fields of particle physics and nuclear physics will be gathered to conduct QCD theoretical studies.

QCD is the theory of the strong interaction (color force), a fundamental force describing the interactions between quarks and gluons which make up hadrons (such as the proton, neutron or pion). And the study on symmetries and the emergence of structure in QCD has become a hit in the field.

The DFG-NSFC Agreement on SG-JIRP was signed in 2005, aiming to encourage scientists from both countries to undertake ambitious long-term and international-level research and to promote interdisciplinary research and cultivate young researchers. This project is the second one approved by NSFC and DFG in accordance of the agreement.

The DFG is Germany's largest research funding organization. It funds knowledge-oriented research without stipulation of topics and utilises competition to select the best projects in terms of scientific quality.
