Green Business Boost from China Deals
UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) has announced several deals with China that will benefit low-carbon and green technology companies in Britain. The news came as David Cameron arrived in China with a delegation of business leaders to boost trade between the two countries. Business secretary Vince Cable said: “China is our ninth largest export market, but it is the world’s second largest economy and the potential for expanding our partnership is huge.”
Dr Cable also announced a joint investment project between the UK and China on solar energy and fuel cells. The Research Councils UK Energy Programme will invest £2.45 million and will work together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to provide equivalent resources to fund the research.
The confirmed deals include:
- Tesco is signing a climate change Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Commerce, in line with their commitment to become zero-carbon worldwide by 2050;
- NorthgateArinso in Hemel Hempstead will be measuring the carbon footprint of Wuxi in a deal agreed with the city’s mayor.
- Arup has agreed to a study of the greenhouse gas emissions of the city masterplan of Beijing with the planning arm of the Beijing Planning Commission.
- David Lock Associates in Milton Keynes is agreeing an urban design project worth £150,000 with Wuhan Planning and Design Institute. (greenbuildnews)
