Lecture for Einstein Award held in Beijing

Dec 21, 2005

Jointly sponsored by the Swiss and German embassies to China and the National Lab for Condensed Matter Physics in Beijing, a lecture conference was held at the CAS Institute of Physics on Dec. 16 in Beijing. Prof. Rudolf von Steiger, director the Berne-based International Space Science Institute, was invited to give a key-note speech entitled "From E = mc² to modern physics.".

To mark "the year of physics" and strengthen cooperation among China, Switzerland and Germany, an Einstein Award program was kicked off at the meeting.

Supported by the program, 33 doctoral students have been selected by China's Ministry of Education and CAS to submit briefs on their attainments and explaining their work's value in international physics exchange. They will compete for 18 winners, who will be invited to visit Germany and Switzerland for a three-week academic trip. The winners are to be announced in March 2006.

The year of 2005 is the centennial anniversary of the epoch-making discoveries made by Albert Einstein, who articulated the celebrated theories of relativity and quantum optics in Bern, Switzerland in 1905. The United Nations designated 2005 as "the year of physics" to mark the centennial and the 50th anniversary of Einstein's death.
