At the invitation of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, CAS President Lu Yongxiang paid a visit to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from Dec. 14 to 17.

During his trip, President Lu attended the opening of the Third International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM), which is held in Hong Kong from Dec. 17 to 22, and conferred the Morningside Gold Medals to the award winners. He was invited to speak at OUHK public lectures and received an honorary PhD degree of Science from OUHK.

ICCM is a triennial congress jointly hosted by institutions in China's mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in a rotating basis. The previous two congresses were successfully held in Beijing (1998) and Taipei (2001) with around 500 participants from all over the world. One of the highlights of the Congresses is the award of the Morningside Medals of Mathematics and the Chern Prize. Awardees are selected by a panel of international renowned mathematicians with the aim to encourage outstanding mathematicians of Chinese descent in their pursuit of mathematical truth.
