CAS/Max Planck Partner Institute recruits leaders from across the world

Dec 21, 2004

A joint commission of experts from CAS and the Max Planck Society (MPS), which is headed by CAS Vice President Chen Zhu and MPS Vice President Herbert Jäckle, held a leading position interview for the forthcoming CAS/MPS Partner Institute for Computational Biology on Dec. 20. The meeting was held during a symposium on perspectives in computational and theoretical biology in Shanghai. More than 10 candidates from the U.S., Germany and France attended the meeting to compete for the director positions of its three departments.

Under the joint sponsorship of CAS, MPG and Federal Ministry for Education and Research of Germany, the Partner Institute will be China's first research body in the field. It will legally and administratively speak to the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS) under CAS.

In the initial stage, the institute will have three research departments composed of senior researchers, backbone researchers, postdoctoral scholars and post graduates. The directors of the departments will have full scientific and economic independence equivalent to that of a director/head of department at a Max Planck Institute. Their initial appointment will be five years and can be extended after a review by the Institute's internationally composed Scientific Advisory Board. In line with the MPG model, the directorship of the partner institute will rotate each year among the three directors.

The aim of this interdisciplinary and theoretically oriented Institute is to account for the increasing involvement of mathematical, computer-science and engineering methods in modern biology and to allow for novel approaches of research at the interfaces between disciplines (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, computation biophysics, theoretical neurobiology or evolutionary biology).
