CAS Vice President Chen Zhu and foreign secretary of the French Academy of Sciences Yves Quere were elected new co-chairs of the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) at its General Assembly held from Doc. 1 to Doc. 5 in Mexico City.

    CAS Vice President Chen Zhu and former foreign secretary of the French Academy of Sciences Yves Quere were elected co-chairs of the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) from 2004 to 2006 at its General Assembly held from Doc. 1 to Doc. 5 in Mexico City.

    As an organization of 90 or so science academies around the world, IAP was initiated at the United Nation's Population Summit held in New Delhi, India, in 1993, with a purpose to act as an international forum that brings together academies of all nations to discuss problems of global concern. It also pursues strategies from promoting "the role of science and technology in addressing these problems." In effect, it seeks to foster cooperation, networking and capacity-building among academies and to strengthen the voice of academies in discussions of science-related issues in both national and international settings.

    The Executive Committee is top organ of power of the organization, In addition to the two chairs (one from developed countries and one developing ones), the committee from 2004 to 2006 is composed of representatives of science academies from the following 11 countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Cuba, India, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Senegal, Sweden and the United States. The former co-chair from developing countries was Eduardo Krieger, president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

    Under the theme of "science for society," this year's IAP conference provided a framework for discussing a broad range of issues that includes global warming, food security and emerging infectious diseases. More than 130 leader or representatives of science academies from 69 countries and regions attended the event, which was hosted by the Mexican Academy of Sciences.

    Prof. Chen Zhu gave a lecture on emerging diseases at the conference. Taking SARS and HIV/AIDS as an example, he elaborated genetic, environmental, ecological and social factors that lie behind the outbreak of epidemics.
