Jin Tao from China - kiwifruit of the Third Millennium.

    While enhancing the world kiwifruit production by developing new cultivars, CAS researchers are gaining a firm foothold in international kiwifruit market as they prolong their control over the propagation rights of a recently developed novel yellow-fleshed cultivar, Jin Tao, in European countries.

    Kiwifruit is one of the few fruits that have made a great impact on the global fruit market over the past century. Its origin and development history provides a good example for a success in the development of a wild natural resource into an international industry. Although the seeds of kiwifruit Actinidia deliciosa were originally collected in China and the worldwide commercial kiwifruit industry was first developed by New Zealand growers, the biggest kiwifruit producer today is Italy. However, in past two decades, Chinese researchers have played an important role in the successful domestication and cultivation of other Actinidia species that have even greater commercial potential than A. deliciosa.

    Jin Tao, or goldenkiwi, is a new cultivar independently bred by a team of Chinese pomologists headed by Dr. Huang Hongwen, director of the CAS Wuhan Institute of Botany (WIB). In 2000, an Italian firm, Consorzio Kiwigold, bought the cultivar's  propagation rights for 10 years in European countries, scooping a remarkable gain from the bargain. WIB recently signed a contract allowing the Italian firm to enjoy the propagation rights in Europe until 2028 by paying a fixed annual royalty, and also a new contract for JIN TAO's commercialization in South America providing for a collective royalty on production.

    The Sino-Italian agreement is applauded as a victory of the Chinese JIN TAO cultivar over the cultivar "Hort-16A", a second-generation flagship strain of the kiwifruit developed by New Zealand breeders. JIN TAO has been advertised in European fruit markets as: "Direttamente della Cina JIN TAO – il kiwi del Terzo Millennio"  (Jin Tao from China, - kiwifruit of the Third Millennium.)

    The move has attracted attention from New Zealand. On Doc. 17, Mr. John McKinnon, New Zealand ambassador to China, came to visit Dr. Huang at WIB. The ambassador spoke highly of the institute's work in the development of new kiwifruit cultivars, saying Jin Tao's success is now changing the pattern of the world's fruit industry. He noted that Dr. Huang's effort in kiwifruit cultivar development provides an exemplary approach for sustainable utilization of China's native plant genetic resource to benefit both the international fruit industry and China, not least enhancing the reputation of Chinese fruit products in the global market.
