The nameplate for the CAS Institute of Nutritional Science (INS) was unveiled on December 15 in Shanghai. CAS President Lu Yongxiang and Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng attended the inaugural ceremony.

    As a subordinate of the CAS Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, INS is established with the objective of conducting novel, focused, multi-faceted and laboratory-based research that investigates the causes, mechanisms, prevention and control of nutrition-related health disorders.

    At the ceremony, President Lu presented a letter of appointment to the INS founding director Xianglin Shi, an expert in anti-oxidant, anti-aging and chemical carcinogen studies and professor of West Virginia University, US.

    According to Prof. Shi's blueprint, INS will foster its research interactions with scientists both inside and outside the institute, including those from different countries. Through collaboration at different levels, funding will be sought from public and private sectors, and international agencies. Additionally, the institute will serve as a training ground for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.

    Under the umbrella of CAS, the institute will provide a rich research environment comparable to that in developed countries. The Institute has an appropriate operating budget, a high-efficiency personnel structure, state-of-the-art research facilities, as well as an excellent supporting infrastructure.

    During the initial phases of development, the institute will be comprised of 10-12 research groups. In each subsequent year, two or three groups will be added until the number reaches 20-25, each with a particular focused research area. Now the institute is conducting a global search for leaders of the research groups.
