A series of high profile lectures known as "Science and China" opened up December 9 in Beijing.
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) members and experts from other institutions will be invited to tour key universities，colleges，and major cities. They are to give lectures focusing on five themes, namely, Review of Historical Development of S&T, Hot Issues at the Frontier of S&T, Addressing the Ethical Concerns in S&T, S&T as a Driving Force of Economy, and S&T Facilitating Social Advancement.
The objectives of the event are to help the society understand the important role S&T plays in social development and bring out the industrious spirit in the youth for the smooth attainment of the country's strategic third-phase development goals.
The event is jointly sponsored by CAS, the Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology, CAE, and the China Association for Science and Technology. It would go on for two or three years. Detailed arrangements of the lectures may be altered according to the needs of varied audiences.
CAS members Zhou Guangzhao and Han Qide gave the first round of lectures. The topics of their speeches were respectively "Review & Prospects of 20th Century Physics" and "The Past, Present and Future of Modern Medicine".
