AIOFM Develops New Methods for Plant Photosynthesis Parameters Measurement

Scientists at Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences manages to develop new methods for measuring plant photosynthesis parameters. The results are published in the Highlight Journal.

There is little available methodology to measure the effective acquisition of photosynthetic process information due to the drawbacks of conventional measurement. The process of plant photosynthesis is so complicated that more chemical reaction will be involved.

Thanks to their efforts, ZHAO Nanjing's research group has made several breakthroughs in multiple key technologies to provide reliable technological means for plant photosynthesis parameters monitoring.

In their study, a fast light pulse-induced phytoplankton fluorescence kinetics measurement system has been established and then the complex photosynthesis process by segmentation and excitation as well as the parameters such as Fv / Fm, σPSII and τQA are obtained.

This method overcomes the difficulty of multi-parameter fitting of theoretical model and obtains photosynthetic parameters accurately.

More specifically, the chlorophyll fluorescence is used as a probe of photosynthesis process based on the energy flow theory of biomembrane. The electron transfer process and the primary electron acceptor acts as the node.

By analyzing the fast phase and relaxation fluorescence kinetics induced by fast variable light pulse, the related parameters of photosynthesis process will be obtained.

The research work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Qingdao National Open Laboratory for marine science and technology, the National 863 program, the Chinese Academy of Sciences STS program, and the Anhui science and technology major project.
