Mar 25, 2017

On March 23, 2017, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Switzerland, signed a five-year bilateral cooperation agreement on organic agriculture.

A new research center - Sino-Swiss Organic Agriculture Research Center (SSOARC) - is to be established under the agreement, which aims to promote basic research for friendly and sustainable agriculture, the transfer of know-how and practical knowledge to Chinese companies and farmers.

The newly established SSOARC, co-located at Changzhou Genetic Resources Research and Development Center (South) in Jiangsu Province and at FiBL, Frick, Switzerland, focuses on key technical problems where current practice falls short of organic principles and research on organic agriculture including organic seed breeding, plant and microbiota interactions, health improvement of animals and plants, etc.

Organic agriculture offers the promise of a future in which food and other farm products are produced and distributed in a healthy, ecologically sound, truly sustainable and fair way. Chinese government supports the establishment of modern agricultural science and technology innovation centers and innovation alliances, and it has issued documents to promote the transition of current agriculture from over-reliance on resource consumption to green, ecologically sustainable agriculture.

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), founded in 1973, is an independent, non-profit, research institute with the aim of advancing cutting-edge science in the field of organic agriculture. It is one of the world’s leading research and information centers for organic agriculture and has devoted to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to boost agricultural productivity while never losing sight of environmental, health and socio-economic impacts.
