Vacancies at Institute for the History of Natural Sciences

The Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHNS), is a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary institution devoted to research on the history of science and technology, as well as their interactions with culture and society, especially science and technology in the Chinese context. The Institute's research fields include the philosophy of science, and scientific archaeology, as well as the strategy and policy of science and technology from the perspective of history. Now it seeks leading scholars in the research Fields of History of Science and Technology, Philosophy of Science and Technology.

Recruitment Program of Global Experts---Thousand Experts Program

I. Qualifications and Conditions
1. Long Term Program
1) Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field from a well-known overseas university, with academic standing as Professor or equivalent at a university or research institute. Normally, applicants should be under the age of 55.
2) Applicants should have had the experience of directing major research projects, been active in the scholarly community, and had a strong publication record (at least three articles in major professional journals and two scholarly monographs in the past five years).
3) Candidates may not hold full-time positions or have been working in China for more than 6 months at the time of application.
4) Successful candidates are expected to sign a contract with IHNS, agreeing to take up the post within half a year of approval of the appointment and to perform duties and tasks according to terms of employment. The appointment is for at least five years, with a residency requirement of nine months per year.

2. Short Term Program
1) Applicants should hold a PhD degree in a relevant field from a well-known overseas university, with academic standing as Professor or equivalent at a university or research institute. Normally, applicants should be under the age of 55.
2) Applicants should have had the experience of directing major research projects, been active in the scholarly community, and had a strong publication record (at least three articles in major professional journals and two scholarly monographs in the past five years).
3) Candidates may not hold full-time positions or have been working in China for more than 6 months at the time of application.
4) Successful candidates are expected to sign a contract with IHNS at the onset of their appointments, agreeing to perform duties and tasks according to the terms of appointment. The program provides for visits of at least 2 months duration per year for three years.

II. Terms of Appointment
1) Successful candidates will be appointed at the rank of Professor and serve as Principal Investigator of a research project.
2) Salary is negotiable and internationally competitive.
3) In addition, successful candidates will each receive additional funds up to one million RMB to cover settling-in allowances and other benefits.
4) A start-up research fund will be made available according to terms of employment.

Recruitment Program of Global Experts – Thousand Young Experts Program

I. Qualifications and Conditions
1) Applicants should have had at least three consecutive years of research experience overseas after obtaining a PhD degree. Ideally applicants should be under the age of 40.
2) Applicants with a PhD degree from China should have taught or worked at a university or research institute abroad for more than 5 years.
3) At the time of application, applicants should hold a teaching or research position at a well-known university or research institute abroad.
4) Applicants should have had the experience of directing major research projects, been active in the scholarly community, and had a strong publication record (at least two articles in major professional journals and one scholarly monograph in the past five years).

II. Terms of Appointment
1) Successful candidates will be appointed at the rank of Professor and will serve as Principal Investigator of a research project. The professorship is a full-time position.
2) Salary and research support will be determined according to rank and terms of employment.
3) Successful candidates will each receive a grant of 500,000 RMB from national government, and additional funds from IHNS that include housing subsidies (60,000RMB annually up to 10 years) and other settling-in allowances (100,000RMB).
4) A start-up research fund will be made available at the onset of appointment.

Recruitment Program of Global Experts – Thousand International Experts

I. Qualifications and Conditions
1) The purpose of the “Thousand International Experts” is to recruit international experts of non-Chinese heritage.
2) Applicants should meet the criteria of the Long Term Program of the Thousand Experts Program listed above, with the exception that the age limit is extended to 65 years of age.
3) Successful candidates are expected to sign a contract with IHNS, agreeing to take up the post within half a year of approval of the appointment and to perform duties and tasks according to terms of employ. The appointment is for at least 3 years, with a residency requirement of 9 months per year.

II. Terms of Appointment
1) Successful candidates will receive the same package of salary, research support, benefits, and other funds as that of the Long Term Program of the Thousand Experts Program specified above.
2) Successful candidates will receive the distinguished professorship of “National Distinguished Expert”.

III. Application Materials

• An academic profile including a curriculum vitae, a list of professional publications, representative publications, and photocopy of overseas employment records and certificate of highest degree obtained.
• Photocopy of passport and a short video statement expressing willingness to work in China.

"Hundred Experts Program” – sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences

I. Qualifications and Conditions
Candidates for the Hundred Experts Program should meet the following criteria:
1) Hold Chinese citizenship or be willing to give up foreign citizenship and resettle in China.
2) Holder of a PhD degree and an assistant professorship or equivalent.
3) Have had the experience of working at a university or research institute abroad for at least 4 years. Normally, candidates should be under 40 years of age, but the age limit may be extended to 45 in special cases.
4) Applicants should have had the experience of conducting research projects, been active in the scholarly community, and had a strong publication record (at least two articles in major professional journals and one scholarly monograph in the past five years).

II. Terms of Appointment
1) Successful candidates will be appointed at the rank of Professor and will serve as Principal Investigator of a research project. The professorship is a full-time position.
2) 2) Salary and research support will be determined according to rank and the terms of the Hundred Experts Program.
3) 3) Start-up funds will be made available in a timely manner after the appointment.
4) 4) Successful candidates will receive additional funds from IHNS that include housing subsidies (60,000RMB annually up to 10 years) and other settling-in allowances (100,000RMB).
