Post-Doctoral Position in Macroevolution of Land Plants

Mar 13, 2017

The “Macroevolution Group” of XTBG is seeking motivated post-doctoral candidates to work on research aiming to uncover the impact of environmental change on the accumulation of the tree-of-life in the past or today. Applicants with a strong interest in the evolutionary mechanisms shaping the distinct responses of plant lineages to climatic fluctuations or habitat fragmentation are most welcomed.

The candidates are required to have a research background in evolutionary sciences. With the following research approaches are considered in particular (1) phylogenomics to uncover the correlation between genome evolution and evolvability of lineages, (2) metabarcoding to study trophic interactions between plants and insects, and (3) evolutionary-ecological modeling to reconstruct the accumulation of ecological/ phenotypic disparity.

Despite the strength of the research group in seed-free land plants, no restrictions exist concerning the plant group chosen by the candidate. The selection process will be based on research merits of the applicants, as documented in the track record, and the consistency of the applicant’s research vision with the one of the Macroevolution Team.

Research base and plans

The research team “Macroevolution” is located at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), a research institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Our research covers a wide range of topics concerning the past and future of plant diversity explored by employing a macroevolutionary perspective.

The research objectives range from (1) documenting the history of the accumulation of biodiversity, (2) uncovering the mechanism shaping the response of lineages to changing environments especially what defines the evolvability of plant lineages, and (3) predicting the future of the tree-of-life in a world increasingly shaped by humanity (anthropocene). The research group has a strong background in the study of seed-free land plants (ferns, liverworts), integration of fossil evidence, and innovative approaches that employs state-of-the-art approaches.

The research vision involves the perspective to apply phylogenetic research not only in the documentation of the past but also as a tool to manage the conservation of biodiversity resources.

To achieve this, the research team is in the process to establish a highly innovative research program. This process requires the identification of the mechanisms shaping the distinct response of different plant lineages to environmental change.

The research group has access to state-of-the-art research facilities including equipment to carry out phylogenomic studies and evolutionary cytology and morphology. We have also access to growth facilities and an extensive network of established fieldwork sites.

The research team is embedded in a well-developed international research network involving collaborations with research teams around the globe. Given the location and facilities, it may be advantageous to consider research projects requiring access to living tropical plant material or research lineages contributing notably to the unique plant diversity of Yunnan.

Applying for the positions:

Applicants should submit a CV including contact details for three references, statement of research interests/plans, pdfs of representative publications. Please send these materials to Prof. Harald Schneider  (harald@xtbg.ac.cn ). If you are invited for an interview, request for further documentation will be made at that time.

Applications with be reviews as they are received. The positions will remain open until filled.

If you have questions about the research positions and the lab, please contact Prof Harald Schneider (harald@xtbg.ac.cn).
