ZHANG Yaping

ZHANG Yaping, born in Yunnan Province 1965, is the Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Dr. ZHANG graduated from Fudan University with a Bachelor Degree in 1986, and Kunming Zoology Institute of Chinese Academy of Science with a Doctorate Degree in 1991. He then became a Post-doctoral fellow at Zoological Society of San Diego, Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, USA, for the following four years until he went back to China and worked as a professor in Kunming Institute of Zoology, CAS (KIZ) and director of Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Evolution of KIZ. In 2002, Dr. ZHANG was appointed professor & head of Laboratory of Genetics, Yunnan University. From 2005 to 2012, he was Director of KIZ and director of State Key Laboratory of Genetic Resources and Evolution, KIZ. He was nominated Vice-President of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2012.

As a research professor of Kunming Institute of Zoology, he has been focusing his research on molecular evolution and genome biodiversity. His investigations involve five correlated areas: molecular phylogenetics; molecular ecology and conservation genetics; human genetics and evolution; origin of domestic animals and artificial selection; genome diversity and evolution.

Dr. ZHANG has published more than 300 publications in SCI journals and is the author and co-author of five books. He was elected member of American Society of Human Genetics in 1996, the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution in 1997 and then American Genetic Association in 1998. He is also elected Vice President of Chinese Society of Genetics in 2004, Vice President of Chinese Society of Zoology in 2005, and President of Yunnan Association for Science and Technology in 2008.

Dr. ZHANG sits on editorial board for several international periodicals including Genome Biology and Evolution, and Animal Genetics. Dr. ZHANG has won dozens of natural science prizes in China, including Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Science and Technology by Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2004. He was elected CAS member in 2003 and fellow of Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2007.
