Dr. Ilkay Orhan was born in Ankara (Turkey) on 24-September-1972, She graduated from Faculty of Pharmacy of Gazi University (Ankara-Turkey) in 1993 and joined the master program offered at the Department of Pharmacognosy of Institute of Health belonging to Gazi University. During her 1st Master degree, she was awarded with a scholarship by the Technical and Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and graduated in 1996. Then, she was awarded with the Monbusho scholarship provided by the Ministry of Education of Japan in 1996 and performed her 2nd master degree at the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of Ryukyus in Okinawa-Japan and graduated from there in 1998. She started her Ph.D. at the Department of Pharmacognosy of Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University (Ankara-Turkey) in 1999 and completed her degree in 2002. In 2003, she visited Department of Chemistry of University of Winnipeg (Canada) as guest scientist under NATO-TUBITAK fellowship program. She was promoted to "Assoc. Prof." position by the Higher Education Organization of Turkey (YOK) in 2004 in the scope of “Pharmaceutical Botany and Pharmacognosy”. In December 2009, Dr. Ilkay Orhan was elevated "full professor" position. She is a permanent academic staff at the Department of Pharmacognosy of Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University (Ankara-Turkey) and involved in both teaching and research activities in both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Prof. Dr. Ilkay Orhan has been working on natural product chemistry and has developed an immense experience in chromatographic, spectroscopic techniques along with isolation, purification and structure elucidation of natural compounds. She has also been working in the field of enzyme inhibitors including acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, superoxide dismutase, and recently tyrosinase and lipoxygenase. She has also engaged microbial transformation studies of bioactive natural products by using latest techniques. In addition, her contribution in promoting chemical science education for graduate and research in Turkey has been well recognized through several national awards. She involved several research projects granted by national and international organizations in the field of natural products.

Prof. Dr. Ilkay Orhan has played an important role in the establishment of in vitro bioassay and enzymology practices which can be used for the development of drugs for Alzheimer's Disease in the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University.

In her academic carrier, Dr. Ilkay Orhan has so far published 83 research and review articles in Science Citation Index international journals. She has also 34 articles in national journals. Dr. Orhan has written 8 chapters in international books and one chapter in national herbal monograph book. She has performed 17 oral presentations and 76 posters. Dr. Ilkay Orhan has given 8 invited speeches in various meetings and symposia. She is the Editor-in-Chief of "Journal of Natural Pharmaceuticals" (www.inatpharm.org) and also Editor of the E-Book "Biotechnological Production of Plant Secondary Metabolites" which will be published by Bentham Publishers in 2010. Dr. Ilkay Orhan is the chairperson of the 6th Conference on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of Southeast European Countries (6th CMAPSEEC) (www.6thcmapseec.org). Her papers have been cited by different researchers approximately 300 times. She has been advised to 5 master theses so far and at the moment, she is the mentor of 5 graduate students.
