Hu Pushes Technology, Science as Key Issues

President Hu Jintao yesterday stressed the importance of the role of science and technology in "building an innovative nation, transforming economic growth patterns and gaining the initiative in development."

He made these points to more than 1,400 scientists and engineers at a biennial conference of China's two leading science and technology organizations which opened in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing yesterday.

"The key is to greatly improve innovative abilities," he said, adding that science and technology "shoulder an important mission" in transforming economic growth patterns.

The five-day conference is being attended by academics from the 709-member Chinese Academy of Sciences and the 751-member Chinese Academy of Engineering, the top honorary bodies that advise the government and industries on key scientific and technological issues.

Recycling issue

"The competition in science and technology has an important status in the competition of overall national strength," Hu told the conference.

He said efforts must be made to develop technology in energy resources to form a sustainable system featuring recycling and low-carbon emissions.

More efforts should also be focused on advanced material and manufacturing science, the equipment manufacturing industry, information technology, agriculture, biology, food safety, health sciences and environment-protection technology, he said.

Hu said space and ocean technology should be developed to ensure "peaceful and efficient use."

State and public-security technology should be prioritized and aimed at improving the ability of monitoring, advanced warnings and management of threats to safety.

Blueprint call

Hu said technological competitiveness was vital for the country's international competitiveness.

Efforts must be made to resolve key technological issues that affected the nation's future development, he said.

Hu called for a blueprint for creating a highly skilled workforce.

During the conference, scientists will discuss low-carbon and renewable energy among other key development issues and review work reports of the two organizations and development strategies.

At the conference, the CAE is to elect its new president and members of the presidium.

Twenty-seven engineers will be awarded the eighth Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize and five scientists will receive the Tan Kah Kee Science Award at the conference.

Workshops will be on the sidelines of the conference. (Xinhua)
