In January 2017, the world's first industrial line for ethanol production from coal was completed at Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and put into operation with capacity of 100,000 metric tons of anhydrous ethanol per year.
It is another major breakthrough in the application of the new coal chemical industrialization technology of international advanced level in China. Based on this, a plant with capacity of 1000,000 metric tons per year will be built by the year of 2020. This achievement will greatly reduce China's huge dependence on ethanol as a fuel additive, and ensure the country’s energy and food security.
